StarCraft II: Pay 2 Play?

Speculation over Starcraft 2 having a monthly subscription have started developing. Blizzard has stated that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will be a completely free service with the ability to monetize on community functions and opportunities for the average person. They are referring to the ability to make money off the game through modifications.

One major concern rests on Battle.net 2.0. Blizzard have been commenting on a monthly fee for their service, which spark these rumors in the first place. Activision has always shown interest in having a solution to make money from their games, but continue to reassure us that StarCraft 2 will only have the entry fee.

Battle.net 2.0 started showing more fuel to the fire by updating their my accounts for gamers. When you log into the game, you can now see (after a new account has been created) a message that says “Play Time Added”, followed by “Play Time Expires June 21″.

This is a perfect month time of subscription and set for a subscription based service inside of Battle.net. This was either an intentional leak by Battle.net or has other purposes. Blizzard denies that this data exists, meanwhile, all Blizzard games will use Battle.net 2.0. This update could merely be an update for another popular game by Blizzard, such as World of Warcraft.

StarCraft 2 fans are not worries about these updates nor rumors. They are just speculation right now. Last month there was an announcement about a regional pricing model for the game. This would included a monthly fee for selected countries only. Activision Blizzard has always relied on their monthly subscriptions as an excellent source of income, so its a matter of time before some time of payment will be made for Blizzard to make money.
